The Citroën GS is a front-engine, front-drive, four or five door, five passenger family car manufactured and marketed by Citroën in two series: for model years 1970-1979 in fastback saloon and estate bodystyles and subsequently as the GSA for model years 1980-1989 in hatchback and estate body styles - the latter after a facelift.

The GS had a front-wheel drive and air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine. The 1,015 cc (1,008 cc Fiscal) engine with 54 DIN PS at 6,500 rpm was available at launch and achieved a maximum speed of 145 km / h at a fuel consumption rate of just 9.7 l / 100 km. It was followed by other air-cooled four-cylinder engines with an output of up to 65 hp.

The GSA (called the GS between 1970 and 1979) was Citroën's attempt to fill the massive hole in their lineup between the very basic 2CV and Ami and the wildly advanced DS lines. The GS/GSA was a clever, streamlined little fastback with an air-cooled flat-four driving the front wheels. It was Citroën's biggest volume seller for years.

Right - in 1975, Heuliez proposed this hatchback version of the GS to Citroën. This was rejected but five years later Citroën launched its own hatchback version - the GSA. In 1980, the GSA was launched, featuring a five door hatchback body, new dash featuring PRN satellites (in the UK the GSA soldiered on with the old style dash for a year or so) new plastic bumpers and a new grille.
