Summit of Ben Nevis. The summit of Ben Nevis, the product of a long extinct volcano, comprises a large stony plateau of about 100 acres. The highest point is marked with a large, solidly built cairn approximately 10 feet high on which sits the Ordnance Survey trig point, the key feature for navigating off the summit in poor weather.

A unique feature of the summit is the Old Observatory, which was opened in 1883. It provided hourly meteorological data for almost 20 years, recording some of the UK's most useful information about mountain weather to date. It closed in 1904 and it now lies in ruin, but can be used for shelter in emergencies.
